8th National ViolaFest “The Viola and the Violist Today”, 28.04 – 30.04.2023

8th edition of the National ViolaFest – Program:
The 8th edition of the National ViolaFest, centered on the Theme “The Viola and the violist Today”, will be held in Bolzano from April 28 to 30, 2023. A joint project by the “Claudio Monteverdi” Conservatory of Music in Bolzano and the Italian Viola Society, the event focuses on the new generations of Italian violists and on contemporary trends in viola making.
The National ViolaFest will be at the same time a wonderful festival with excellent concerts, solo performances and chamber music for and with viola proposed by internationally renowned artists, and a laboratory for the advancement of viola playing in Italy, through rehearsals, meetings, masterclasses and workshops.
The previous editions have been hosted by the Conservatories of Livorno, Florence, Messina, Cosenza, Cremona, Siena and Bari.
The National ViolaFest in Bolzano includes celebrations for the 90th anniversary of the birth of Bruno Giuranna and for the 10th anniversary of the foundation of the Italian Viola Association, and promotes the theme “north meets south”. The festival showcases the two main guests Bruno Giuranna, internationally renowned soloist and Pauline Sachse, viola Professor at the Musikhochschule Lübeck, as well as numerous outstanding violists representing the whole country. Viola students from Conservatories from Sicily to the Alpine regions will be featured in concerts and masterclasses.
On Thursday April 28, 2023 at 20.30 a recital by Pauline Sachs performing intriguing and uplifting solo viola music of her own composing is programmed. On Friday April 29, at 18.15 Bruno Giuranna will interpret the timeless music by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Many other high-profile events are scheduled over the three days from April 28 to 30, 2023 at the Monteverdi Conservatory in Piazza Domenicani, Bolzano.
At the end of the National ViolaFest 2023, on Sunday April 30, 2023 at 3.15 pm professors and students will celebrate the conclusion of the festival with a final concert performed by the three viola orchestras of the National ViolaFest.
