The Early Music Department

Professionalism, artistic curiosity and a spirit of cooperation are the salient features of the teaching and production activities promoted by the teaching staff of the Department of Early Music at the Conservatory ‘C. Monteverdi’ in Bolzano.

The core of the Department consists of the following Schools:

  • Harpsichord and Historical Keyboards (Prof. Alessandro Padoan)
  • Recorder (Prof. Lorenzo Cavasanti)
  • Transverse Flute (Prof. Lorenzo Cavasanti)
  • Baroque Violin (Prof. Barbara Altobello)
  • Viola da Gamba (Prof. Giuliano Eccher)

structured in Level I academic courses (3-year) and Level II academic courses (2-year), new courses for ‘Young Talents’, and Propaedeutic Courses.

The teaching staff work in total synergy, so much so that, thanks to the contagious vitality of their teaching experience, they succeed in forming particularly motivated and bonded groups of students. The weekly opportunity to meet and study together is offered above all by the stimulating courses of ENSEMBLE MUSIC FOR VOICES AND ANCIENT INSTRUMENTS, a true workshop for original productions that the Department of Early Music organises each year as part of the “MUSICA ANTICA AL MONTEVERDI” cycle, with concerts held at the Conservatory and in some of the most significant artistic and historical sites in the city and province of Bozen/Bolzano.

Each year, several Masterclasses are offered to our students by prestigious foreign lecturers invited by the Department of Early Music thanks to the establishment of various Erasmus collaborations with: Mozarteum Salzburg, Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, MUK – Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität Wien, Kunst-Universität Graz, the Royal College of Music Stockholm, etc.

The Department of Ancient Music is in the process of expanding its academic offer with the introduction of a Level I academic course in PREPOLYPHONY (Gregorian Chant), for which official approval has already been obtained from the University Ministry and the Provincial Council of Bozen/Bolzano.
